The film uses historical background to tell a story of passion, competition and individuality. It manages to criticize the Russians for their nationalism but do it in a way that we still feel sympathy for all the characters. It probably doesn't have a great chance of winning an Oscar but it would make a solid entry in the HBO programme for Sunday.
